How can I build a dedicated hard drive unit connected to my PC.

I am a professional photographer. I am currently using 250 Gb of hard drive storage, but allowing for back ups to an external drive, I am running out of space (each session I shoot takes around 1Gb of storage - sometimes more).

I want to be able to build storage as I need it by adding hard drives. In a perfect world I would like a separate box connected to my PC where as my storage needs increase I can add a further drive.

What's the best way of doing this? I am sorry if this sounds like a dufus question!
