Multi-format DVD players

I'm a novice with DVD players. Some friends from overseas (UK uses Pal format) will be sending me some of their old DVD's. What kind of DVD player should I get which play both NTSC & Pal formats (the cheaper, the better)?? Are there specific things I should look for? Also, would it be a good investment to get one that also plays video tapes and MP3"s??? I need some advice soon. Thanks for any help you can give me.
