Cant burn anything

can anyone help please, i have just purchased a pioneer dvr 108 writer, no matter what i do i cant burn anything cant even copy a dvd. It is driving me nuts, i cant even put data onto the discs. I am using verbatim discs, one error i got was the discs are write protected ??????
