If the picture gets snowy and the sound becomes distorted there is probably a poor solder joint inside the tuner module. If the picture fades out or disappears and the sound remains there are many things that can cause this from a poor solder joint on any video component to a weak CRT. Does the problem only occur with Tuner Input or both Tuner and Aux In Input?

When problem occurs do you have OSD (On Screen Display) i.e. Channel Number? If you do have OSD and it is of good quality, then the CRT or picture tube is Ok. If you don't have OSD then the CRT is suspect, but could also be a poor connection to the CRT filaments. To check for OSD leave TV in "Audio Mute" and when the problem occurs see if "Muting" remains on the screen.
