Yes, I was able to get it resolved. I got the schematics, traced it to a transistor that was defective. With the transistor removed from the circuit, it works fine. I highly doubt that the PROTECTION circuit is functional now, but that's OK with me. (Replacing the transistor would probably restore the PROTECTION feature.)
