Picture Break-up on play back (LP)

When I record on LP, during playback there often is picture break-up - horizontal lines mismatch and then revert back to normal. It happens intermittently but happens frequently enough to significantly disrupt viewing (and ruin the taping aof a few special moments). Any suggestions as to what is the cause and what may be the solution?
