Unable to convert VHS to my computer using my digital camcorder.

Help - I have connected my VCR Output to the SONY Digital Camcorder and digital camcorder to my computer via the firewire. Have changed the DV/out to "On" on the Camcorder. When I play the VCR, I see the content in the LCD of the camcorder. Howevr, when I try to click on capture button to record the VHS to my computer hard-drive it says there is no tape. I want to capture the content of the VHS tap. The software thinks I want to record the tape in the digital camcorder. How can this be fixed, so I don't have to record the VHS tape to the camcorder first? I want to do it directly using my camcorder as the analog converter. The Sony manual says the camcorder can do that.
