jvc gr-d72u capture problem

I got a jvc gr-d72u. I am trying to connect the camcorder to my pc using firewire pci ieee 1394 card. The computer would recognize the camcorder, and the window movie maker would come up. when i clicked on the capture button, the camcorder would play the tape, but the preview window remained black, and the file size stayed at 5kb. Anyone have the answer for this problem?

I was experiencing the same issue where my video apps (Windows Movie Maker, Pinnacle Studio 11 Ultimate, and Magix Movie Edit Pro 12) would control my JVC GR-D72U camcorder, but not capture any video. I'm running Windows XP SP2 (also experienced the same problem on 32-bit Vista Ultimate). I resolved the issue by replacing my non-TI FireWire adapter with a SIIG Inc., FireWire 3-Port PCI adapter with a Texas Instruments (TI) chipset. The key is using a TI-based Firewire adapter. Everything works great now. Needless to say I'm very happy!! Hope this helps you.

I have had this problem many times! Then I solve it until I haven't used the camera in a long time....and I start all over again, including tonight. But I have finally learned! Although I have never tried an IEEE fire card...only the wire. This is what I have learned. Pitch any USB cable or software that came with the camera. It only seems to work with USB anyway. Pitch Pinnacle....movie maker is simpler anyway although not as neat as Studio. With everything off, connect the IEEE fire wire to the camera and the computer. Turn camera on to play position. Boot up. Instead of finding GR-D72 it will say DVD compliant device or some such wording. Then A screen will pop up and ask if you want to start with Windows Movie Maker. Click on Movie Maker and start capture. Preview screen automatically starts when the capture begins. This worked for me with my previous computer using Windows 98 as well.

I am having the same problem. Using the software sent with the camera works, but my 2 day old copy of Pinnacle Studio 9 does not recognize the camera. It is finger pointing time. Pinnacle says it is a problem with Service Pack 2. Microsoft hasn't responded. Have you found an updated driver? I can not find the D72U in the legacy section of JVC's web page. My techs think it is a driver problem. Let me know what you find. Especially if the solution is from JVC. Thanks Bruce
