Help figuring out why my Sony Handycam shuts off while transferring data

I need help figuring out why my DCR-HC32/HC42 Sony Handycam shuts off while I am using it to transfer data from my vcr/dvd player to my Macintosh. About two minutes after starting it it just shuts off. The guy that set it up like this set it up so that your using the pause/record feature. Is there a better way then this?
