Sound fades in/out

Having problems with sound quality in Record and playback with my camcorder. Sound fine & normal for several seconds then no sound for a few seconds, repeating again and again. What gives? Any suggestions for what to check or adjust. Bought on ebay so no warranty. Camcorder is reported as barely used.
