No sound

There is no sound in the play mode. Camera was OK and was idle for last 8 months and now wanted to use it but no luck. I read the users manual and I have in the stereo mode as its required. When I play the tapes there is no sound, and when I record there is no sound. For what its worth the remote doesnt work also ( batteries are Ok and the remote works as I test it out) Dont care about the remote but I need the sound. I hate these problems when you dont use equiment for a long time and during its time off its breaks down, it happens to cars too. Much thanks
