DVD displays a double vertical display on the tv, even with not disk loaded

I have a JVC VCR/DVD combo. Whenvever we switch to the DVD side it displays a double, split vertical screen. The VCR side seems to be working fine. This started happening one day after we had just watched a dvd the night before. The split screen happens even at the JVC menu, with no disk loaded.
