I cannot see dvd's because I cannot switch between different video modes.

I receive a TV model AV-27820, but without remote control, so I bought an universal remote control and everything goes very well. Recently I bought a dvd player and surprisingly I cannot see any dvd because from my universal remote control and from manual menu also, I cannot switch for different video modes. What can I do to see dvd's??? Thank you for your advice!!
