SONY DSC W1, Problem

Victor Posted May 12, 2006

Problem with sony dsc w1.Lens will not retract or capture images

My Sony Dsc W1 developed a problem, dont know how. The lens will not retract, makes a noise , goes half in and then out again, message,"turn power off and on again" appears. Unable to take pictures. Other functions are ok. Is it due to memory effect, should we use only Sony batteries. If it is a major problem how much would it cost. Tks for your help. Victor

I also have a Sony DSC W-1 which I have LOVED and cared for for almost two years. Shot over 10,000 photos. Same problem with lens happened unexpectedly last week in Gettysburg. Had no back-up. Ruined my vacation...Will not work no matter what batteries or stick used. The few shots I had on camera I was able to view and retrieve. A few months ago I also had a problem with the battery cover not closing completely, as if a piece of plastic broke off. Did not affect the operation of the camera, so I did not get it repaired. Now it's no good at all. On e-bay today I saw a W-1 for sale for $40 with the same lens problem. So is this an inherent defect in this model? Too bad. I really loved that camera!
