Error code C31:40 will not go away! Can I get rid of this error code or do I have to send off to repair?

Aprrox. 2 weeks ago the error code C31:23 appeared on my Sony DCR-TRV950E camcorder. It would not let me insert a tape, however the tape deck would close without a tape. I checked the Manual and followed the advice (by leaving the the tape deck open and removing the power supply). The error code has not gone away and has changed to C31:40. Is there a way in which I can fix this error code without professional repair?
