Dead Sony KP-53HS10 and the likes

Kurt vonSternberg Posted Jun 01, 2006

Sony model KP-53HS10 and the likes---NO POWER UP---- These sets are "notorious" for HV flyback xformer failures

These sets are notorious for HV flyback failures. There are NONE available from Sony as "OEM" P# 8-598-828-00. HOWEVER--there are "aftermarket" replacements available from several electronics distributors ie: ElectronixOnline Suburban Electronics, Tritronics, Technotronic-Dimensions, and others for approx. $18-30 each. The major mfgr. for this aftermarket xformer is ASTI P# AI-2305. NOBODY has complete replacement "sweep boards" for these sets nor are they required unless they "BURN--UP" beyond repair. All other parts on this board prone for any failures are relatively inexpensive "off the shelf" common components. The HV flyback is the MAJORITY of the "NO POWER UP" and "Hissing" problems encountered with these sets. I have over 40 yrs. experience in electronics engineering and bench repair service and recently had one of these sets "given" to me in mint condition, but DEAD. The $20 HV flyback fixed the problem 100%. Hope this info helps you poor, lost souls with a "dead end" problem ! They are certainly repairable, BUT don't depend on Sony to bail you out !!!

Hi. My sony is the same model. About 6 years old. I think I'm having the same power up failures. I opened it up and turned it on, but I hear it click on at the power supply and then I hear a short buzz like something's shorting out. I tried to figure out which board the sound in coming from, and to the best I can tell, the shorting sound comes from the middle ckt board. Do you think this is a flyback problem too?

You sound like you know your stuff. I have the same power up problem with my sony (same model). Can you give me an idea of the complexity of this fix. I have some electronic experience. Where should i start?
