My JVC DVD/VHS recorder has no sound!

I purchased my JVC DR-MV5S DVD/VHS recorder in December and about two months ago the sound stopped working. Every once in awhile you can hear sound but it appears very faint, and brief no matter how loud the volume on the television is. I have tried other players with the TV and they work fine so I know it's not the TV. I've also tried connecting other cables, different VHS tapes and DVDs, everything. I have no idea what the problem is but would like to know what it might be before bringing the unit in for repair. Any ideas?
