DSC-P100

Lens won't retract or focus on DSC-P100.

I have a Sony DSC-P100 Cybershot, which I purchased in April 2005. I freshly recharged the battery yesterday, and while taking pictures today, suddenly the camera wouldn't focus. I turned it off, and the lens would not retract. I turned it back on, and in picture-taking mode, I get the message "Turn the power off and on again." I turn the power off, the lens jerks a bit but doesn't retract. I turn it on again, and the lens jerks a bit, and I get the same error message. In picture review mode, I can still access the photos stored on the memory stick. I tried the instructions for resetting the camera by taking the battery out, but that doesn't change anything. As I was in the middle of taking pictures successfully when this happened, I am mystified as to what could be wrong. Has anyone else had a similar problem? The camera is just a year and 2 months old.
