DSC P9 not working properly

The Sony camera we have is acting strangely. It has fully charged battery in it. On start up the lens goes out comes back in and does this several times (the dial is set to the little camera for taking pictures), the LCD then shows a message to turn off and turn back on again. I can adjust all the other settings if I want in the set up screen and also reset the date etc. I have also used the reset button inside the battery compartment. At to no avail. The camera will just wind the lens in and out and open and clos the iris on the end of the lens and not do anything. Although last night I did manage to take a picture (I don't know what I did differently but the camera would not focus (lots of whirring inside but no zoom or wide angle and defintely no focus). Any idea as to what the problem could be and would it be worth fixing?
