can the sound be changed on the playback from 12 to 16 bit audio?

I'm using the jvc gr-d30u as a vtr to save the heads on my xl2 but the jvc will not allow me to change the audio feature in play back mode. This little issue is causing my footage to steam with glitches. The tape was recorded with 16bit audio but the jvc is stuck in 12bit playback mode.. how do I resolve this problem.
