Problem with monitor on television - in middle of monitor, a large, black, rectangular box is displayed.

I bought this television a few years ago. Today, I turned it on and the monitor displayed a large rectangular black box; when I manipulated the remote (chose to change input, for example), the black box disappeared momentarily, only to reappear shortly thereafter. Is the television repairable or should I purchase a new one? Maria
