Re[2]: Sony KP51HW40 rear-projection TV

Greg Posted Nov 12, 2006, in response to:Steve

The lamps seem to be a big problem for Sony. I have the KP-51WS500 and am in the process of replacing the second lamp at a cost of $600 each. There seems to be a technology problem where the lamps cant last long enough to get good value out of this type of tv. I am considering switching to Plasma or LCD to not have to worry about this issue any more.

I have a Sony KP51WS500 and have a bad tube also. It started about one year after purchase I started getting blue lines. They started to become anoying I change the brightness and contrast to reduce their presence so that it wasn't so noticable. Eventually, the entire screen would fade to blue. Now I am faced with replacing the tube(s). My wife heard from a technician that the tubes only last about 5000 hours. if you leave your tv on 12 hours / day that's 4380 hours. So I'd be replacing it in two years minimum and at $400 - $500 a pop that's just plain stupid. I'm buying a plasma.
