Why 60 hertz or 50hertz

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello everyone... Good day. Im noticed some devices like motors, appliances or any electronic devices used different rated of hertz liked our TV used 60 hertz some TV used 50 Hz others rated 50~60. I know that every countries have there own standard of hertz...My question is there any effect with the performance of a motor or any kind of electronic devices if they used with different rate of hertz. Is the rate of hertz has effect the design, size of the wire and number of turns of wire..etc.. when creating a new electronic devices... Don

Forgot to add that as far as TV's are concerned its basically used as part of a timing function. All explanations given heavily abbreviated as it could take more than one page for a full explanation.

Very basically if a 50Hz induction motor is used on a 60Hz supply it will run faster than the stated RPM, likewise a 60HZ on 50HZ slower, the emphasis of course being "induction" motor which is brush-less. Its for that reason you cannot use an American clock on the UK system (even with a voltage reducer on the UK mains supply which is 50Hz.) as the clock would lose 10 minutes every hour. There are other complicated reasons involving loading currents and iron core densities, being higher on lower frequencies, although suffice to say that although with differences of between 50 and 60Hz you are talking fractions, a 60Hz induction device represents more of a short circuit on 50Hz than 60Hz which obviously means a higher current flow.
