Unable to focus using View finder and LCD

I am unable to focus on anything using the view finder or CD sreen. Both display a grey/black screen. This makes it impossible to record anything. However I am able to play and view previously recorded tapes and view the recording on the LCD. This proves that the LCD is operational, but not working for new recordings. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ian.
