Re: Sony TRV-230 error, C:31:42

DutchTexan Posted Dec 20, 2006, in response to:Bart

My TRV730 gave the C:31:42 message after we took it out on a cold morning and let it sit outside for a while. Unloading / loading the cassette resolved the issue for a couple of seconds. The hair dryer trick did not help at all. I did not try the whacking and took the plunge to take it apart. It started working without a hitch while it was in pieces and continued to work after I put it together again.

Hello Everyone, I had this error occur today while trying to review Christmas footage. Here's a summary of what happened.... I had just picked up the camcorder and turned it on to record some more christmas footage of the kids. Then I got the error. c:31:42. I have an older camcorder, so I tried the tape in there and got the same code! No matter what tape I put in the first camcorder, I kept getting the error. I noticed that with my old camcorder (both Sonys) the error message came up only once more when I put in a new tape, then when I ejected the new tape and put it back in, it worked. So, I opened the tape and noticed the some of the edges were a little crimped. I don't know what that happened, but luckily it was at the end of one scene and the start of blank tape. So, I just spliced the bad tape out and it worked. I found out that 8mm tapes are not the same as vhs when you need to unlock the cassette reels to let them spin. On VHS, you could just push in, but on 8mm, you have to pull down on the little square in the back middle bottom of the tape. I hope this helps someone out there.
