Camera zoom broken

The zoom on my camera was broken by my stepfather. What i was told is he had his hand over the zoom when he tried to turn it on, and when the zoom tried to go out it was stopped by his fat stupid finger and went back in. I dont really think this is what really happened, all i know for sure is that my camera is the zoom no longer works. If i try to zoom in it doesnt work and wont allow me to take a picture until i restart the camera. It refuses to zoom either in or out and i dont know what to do. How can i fix this? I want to get it done for as cheep as possible. Any ideas?
