I can't get the DVD recorder to reconize a blank DVD.

When a blank DVD is inserted the disc error comes on.It says"playback may not be available on this disc".When you press record the error E24 comes on and says "cannot record on this disc".Even though it is a blank disc.I have tried DVD-R 4X in the imation brand but this did nothing different.I have tried fugifilm and H\P 16X with the same result.When you try to record on a disc that has been recorded on but is not full the error E20 comes on.
