JVC error code P1

Recently have received error code P1 (or P with lower case L I'm not sure which is correct)when attempting to play either a DVD or VHS tape. This was on a JVC vhs-DVD combo player/recorder. The JVS help support was unfamilar with this code. Neither the DVD or VHS will play (although did at one time)but you can hear the VHS tape running so defintiely not a power supply issue. Has anyone encountered this error code before? Help appreciated.
