Re: There goes another one - 7 yr. old Sony KV-27V40 DEAD !

John Posted Jan 10, 2007, in response to:G. Wood

I'll add mine to the list - August 1998. 4 Standby flashes, no start. Died this week Jan. 2, 2007. I suppose I should call myself lucky - it made it farther than most ...

If you will review the entire sequence of comments on this design problem totally ignored by Sony , you will see parts and labor to fix the problem should run $125 - $150 unless you are in a major , too high priced metro area. Once fixed by an honest , able repair expert, your otherwise cheaply soldered/welded Sony Trinitron could last another 5+ years. This problem gives many indications that Sony's premium price paid presumably for superior quality is a hollow 'promise ' , and a once excellent brand has slid back into the densely populated pack of so-so manufacturers. How will this translate into the new rage -- $3,000 ++ plasma and LCD TVs ? Are most consumers aware to begin with that these dazzling gizmos have a limited life of , what ........ 5 to 7 years ? In which case a buyer will be paying ANNUALLY what this 27" Trinitron cost new 7 odd years ago ! ! ! Anyone considered self-imposing a 5 year moratorium on TV ? With the caliber of programming streaking into the sewer as it is .........probably an excellent personal development 'strategy'. And at these prices , a quite prudent decision !
