Mini system doesn't turn on anymore.

Hi. A friend of mine has a JVC mini system, model FS-G5. It was working fine, but now all it does, when one turns it on, is to show the message PROTECT on the display and, after about 10s, it turns off. Nothing works, there's not enough time to put radion or cd on, whatever putton one pushes, PROTECT shows up and then it is turned off. Any thoughtS?
