Hi,
I am sorry to hear this.The same thing happened to me.I brought a mp4 a chinese brand which costed me around $56,the sellers said I could view .avi files and mpeg4 files and inside the player there was an ice age clip as .avi which could be played but when I reached home and tryed downloading some .avi clips and whne I tried to run it it couldn't and showed the warning called "format error".
If any one is trying to buy any chinese branded mp4,mp4 or any other divice tell them not to buy chinese brand.

  May be your download the wrong format, you konw there are severl format which is called mp4 format.
  You may get a cd in your package, use the programe on the cd to change the format you download, you will play it on your mp4 player.
