It would appear that the problem is entirely caused by your power unit being faulty, so you should try verifying this by connecting a small 12 volt bulb across the round power plug, that is of course unless you have a simple test meter to hand.
The battery you have just purchased will likely be perfectly OK, and also possibly the original! so you can forget about purchasing another.
PS: A faulty connection on the contacts of camcorders power input socket could also be responsible for the problem but its highly unlikely, however this will be verified by the PU output test, as if it does show voltage is present then it points at the socket possibly being faulty.
Whats mentioned is the most likely causes but not all.
