My new camera only records audio. video playback is fine, but the screen only shows black as if the lens cap is on.

The camera has worked fine for a couple of months and then this weekend it stopped showing anything but a black screen in the viewer. The counter and everything else is still there, just a black background as if the lenscap was on. on playback it works fine. Any thoughts?
