Some help would be great with my camcorder

I have a jvc model gr-d347u. It worked fine when I got it a t Christmas time. When you turn the power on everything is good but when I pause the camera and turn it off it doesn't go off I have to completely take the battery off for it to power down the recording. If I don't it will not let me play back anything it just stay in record mode. Also are you supposed to be able to see from the view finder it has always been black. it only works when you open the screen. Any help would be great.
