Works, sort of works, doesn't work!!!!

This digital video camera was working perfect one day and then poof ---- no video. I sat the camera on the counter without the tape and just let it sit for a while (12+ hrs). The video came back but was very streaked (vertically). Then after several more hours the video was clear as a bell. Let it sit some more and the video is backed to streaked. I sit and stare at it and it's like watching water boil -- it never changes. Anyway, the video goes from streaked to clear to streaked. Any idea what is causing this -- CCD, controller board, loose connection, ??? The camera was less than $300 two years ago and don't want to spend another $200+ in repairs, just go buy another camera.
