Problems with taking indoor pictures

When taking a picture using the c763, i am finding that it only takes a proper picture in low light, intermittently, with most pictures just coming out black. I have noticed that the flash is brighter when it does take a proper picture. It does this in Auto mode. Is the camera itself faulty or am i doing something wrong.
