error 97 is a "nvram" failure. the nvram is the chip (actually 3 chips) on the DR118 board that store the deck's alignment parameters (tension, capstan and reel calibration, etc. I repaired one about 3 years ago with tis problem.

    replace the chips and run the calibration routines; they will store the data during the calibration.
