It depends on if the camcorder was brand new or not, as a faulty battery is not exactly unheard of. However no matter what its status as far as purchase is concerned, it could also be that the internal fuse associated with the charging circuit has blown, this necessitating the case being separated to gain access to the "soldered in" fuse.
