Images are too dark, as if I am not using the flash.

Hi there I have owned a Sony Cybershot DSC-P51 for a number of years now, but think this camera may have developed a fault. I took some photographs the other day using the flash and upon inspecting the photographs, they appear too dark. I tested the flash the following day and although the camera does actually flash, the resulting photographs are still too dark to see, in fact, the image is brighter if I do not use the flash. Any ideas what this fault is and how it can be repaired?
