Black/grey fuzzy screen when trying to record - no picture

My digital video camera cut from a nice, clear, color recording to a fuzzy, black/grey lined screen towards the end (last 2 mins) of my previous tape (Fuji film). When I rewind to playback, the playback mode also shows a nice color recording that switches to the fuzzy grey one at the same point. So I bought a new tape to solve the problem, and this one (also Fuji -- though never had had a problem with Fuji tapes in the past) shows the fuzzy grey screen during recording from the start of this new tape. This is so odd? Any ideas?

This could be the lens cap problem the symptom of it being, when the camcorder is switched to camera mode as though you were going to take some video, is the image of whatever the camcorder is pointing at OK in the LCD / viewfinder?, if its not then thats the manufacturing defect known as the lens cap problem. Further info can only really be supplied to a DIRECT e-mail address as it may involve links which are blocked by Pechorins filter.
