Need help desperately with convergence issue.

For no apparent reason my unit suddenly showed all kinds of blue shadowing around most of the images on the screen. I understand this to be a convergence issue but I was unable to correct the convergence settings using my user manual. The crosses would not line up correctly when I tried to apply the settings. Can I fix this myself? The set is approx 3-4 years old and I hate to spend a ton of money on it.
