JVC GR-Dv500U camcorder, cassette cartage does not close

I have a JVC GR-Dv500U mini DV camcorder. I bought the camera about 2 yrs back and have no problems with it. Recently I was changing the cassette when an error flashed on the screen "Safe mode" eject cassette. Since then the cassette cartage is open and it will not close. I tried connecting to the AC source and resetting the batteries but no luck. Can anyone help me in getting the camera working again. Thanks
