Panasonic DVD-31 not playing discs.

DVD player will not play discs: after inserting disc, monitor screen will display "reading" and player display will show number "O Read" for about 20 seconds, then the player display will show "No Play" and the monitor will show "This type of disc cannot be played. Please insert a different disc." I've tried different discs and tried Initializing with no luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!
