Speaking as a non JVC dedicated engineer, I can say that this must be a once in a blue moon situation, as in the years I have been involved with camcorders I have never came across such a thing as this. However anything of this nature can only be caused by a direct short circuit of the actual battery circuit itself, as the power unit is incapable of providing the sort of amperage necessary to melt anything. Just out of curiosity, I would be interested to know exactly what melted in the camcorder, was it the battery casing or the rear holder section?
