jvc tv 42' flatscreen 42x688

Picture, but no sound, 13 months old, circuit city purchase

We purchased our 42 inch jvc flatscreen at circuit city last Christmas (2007) and now it is only 13 months old and the picture has gone out (we have sound). The cable company checked and it is not the cable box. What could have happened?

Do the Stripped lines have color? Red, Green, blue or white OR Are they Horizontal (left to right) Bands of NO distinct color, like missing light? If colored lines, are they Horizontal (left/right) or Vertical (up/down)? A nice repair shop (small shops) may, and I stress may, try to replace only the bulb or inverter. This will be at least 100-200 dollars. A large shop (Best Buy and such) will replace the LCD Panel. $1200 gauruntee. I suggest 2 options if you cannot repair yourself. 1. Contact JVC TODAY and ask for a exception to the warranty since you are only a few days out...maybe they will be nice and help. Some people get lucky. 2. put the unit on ebay with a photo of the TV when you turn it ON and see the lines. Start the price at $180 and you should get enough toward a replacement. replacement will be about $700...the price has dropped since you bought yours. I would really push #1 as a start. Many manufacturers provide something when you are only 1 month out. Good Luck!! Bobby

Thanks Bobby, The color seems to go from black to blue and there are some striped lines. Does this sound like the type of problem you are referring to. Also, how much do you estimate this type of repair if taken to the shop?

NO Picture with Sound usually means the inverter or a backlight bulb has gone out. Do you get a picture or some lighting of the screen for a short period (3 seconds or so) when the TV is first turned on? If so then yes, backlight or inverter. Since you are out of warranty, I suggest shopping ebay for a TV that has a broken LCD panel and removing these parts from that TV. If you cannot repair yourself, you will definately need to send it in for service. Also, if you never get a picture or any lighting of the panel, you may have another issue related to the LCD Panel. Either way, Service or Ebay. By "lighting of the panel" I mean that you will normally notice the LCD Screen will go from a black(LCD bulbs OFF), to a lighter black(LCD bulbs ON). Basically, you will notice the color of the panel change slightly. If this happens, and I am sure it will, then you have the problems described above.
