Convergence problem with JVC 56" projection

Bill Connolly Posted Jul 28, 2009

Think twice before digging into a convergence problem and doing nothing but making it 10X's worse.

I too had a convergence problem. I read all the postings about people saying how easy it is to just change the (2) STK-110 chips with a STK-150 chips and like magic the convergence problem is fixed. Well let me tell you I was getting ready to go down that dirt road myself and doing it myself. But something didn't feel right so I called a local T.V. repair shop that's been in the business for 25yrs. He came to my house the next day, I watched him make the entire repair (replaced both STK150 chips). Let me tell you I know now why so many people reported on-line that they tried to "do it themselves" but it didn't work. I consider myself a pretty handy guy but as I watched him make the repair I picked up on about 10-15 different things that he did that I probably would have missed. You have to unplug half of the main board just ot get to the chips and the soldering job, although not rocket science, is one of things that looks easy to do but is fraught with opportunity to screw it up without knowing you messed it up. Long story short, unless you're real good and really trust your skills, I would suggest you find a dependable local proffesional to do it right the first time. By the way the cost of my repair was $150 total and that includes parts, labor and trip charge to my house. Hope this helps someone to not make the same mistake so many have already made...trying to save a couple dollars up front but spending a lot more in the long run!!!

A very sensible decision!! as many attempt to carry out tasks of this nature and end up devastating the printed circuit board (or worse) resulting in a very time consuming job in trying to repair it, as they just do not appreciate that it not only requires the proper tools to do these type of jobs but also the skill to know what "not" to touch. This is the problem with sites such as this, as although many helpful tips can be passed on unfortunately on the other hand it gives a platform for certain types with very limited knowledge themselves to goad others into doing things they would have been best not to, you having sensibly declined!
