Cannot get to stup menu to set time

I have a strange problem when trying to get to the setup menu to re-set time, the only thing that comes up is the timer program section which controls the time of recording and shut down. The original remote fro the unit is long gone and the after market remote worked ok, is this a problem with the remote or the unit itself?
