Have you thought of trying it out on a headphone socket on another device? also just how do you know that the wires are OK? as the usual place for a defective wire is where it leaves the jack plug and only a test meter would show that, unless you wiggle the cable at that point whilst listening to something then you "might" hear the sound going off and on.
