When you mention that it doesnt play back are you referring to what you thought you had recorded? or does this statement apply to when trying out previously recorded (not recently) tapes as well? The problem mentioned does sound like a heavily contaminated tape head which may only respond to wet cleaning, as cleaning cassettes are not only very limited in effectiveness but can also damage the head if over used.
