KV32V15 power Supply

Dan Posted Feb 17, 2004

No power on my Sony KV32V15 TV

The TV just turned off by itself. I turned it back on, and about 5 seconds later it went dead again. It won't turn on with the switch on the set or the remote. I've unplugged it, still no luck. I tested the fuse (next to where the power cord comes into the set) and it tests as good. Today, this same TV is $799.00. How much will it cost to have a new power supply installed in this TV and is that likely to fix the problem? (I didn't see any broken solders when I removed the back). Thanks!

First try to follow a suggestion from LOU and try to get your power company to fix it. If that does not work, check if your set was plugged in any surge protection device such as power strip with surge protection. Most of those have warranty on the strip itself and everything that is connected to it. If that does not work, then you have no choice but consider to call a reputable repair shop. I have a KV32V15 (27", 36" XBR's and other sets from this series have virtualy identical circuitry) that died after nine years, and it was not due to the power surge. All these sets have common problem with power supply transistors and horisontal output transisitor (HOT). They usualy go dead at the same time. If fuse is intact and set would not even turn on that is most likely the problem. The tree transistors (1 HOT-2SC4927, and 2 P/S-2SC4834) cost less the $10.00 for all three. There might be some other components involved, such as 0.1 oHm fusible resistor, VDR's, electrolitic capacitors, which you can only verify if you find all these components, remove them from the board and test them with DMM. If you have never done this type of repair, then you should not attempt this as you might do more damage. That power suplly generates some very high voltages and if you do not know what you doing you can also get hurt. If you decided to get it fixed and do not want to do it yourself as I have mentioned above I suggest you find reputable repair shop.
